Happiness Point

When the term “envy” comes across my mind, I immediately remember the second part of an anime OVA I watched about a year ago, entitled “Denpa Teki na Kanojo”.

In the second part of the OVA, the main characters face a certain strange sect. The sect comes up with quite a strange theory: that the happiness in this world is limited in number and that number is constant. This belief drives the sect member into bullying and doing other misdeeds to other people in order to rob their happiness so that more happiness points in the world are available to them.

While this theory is rather strange, “envy” in the real world works the same way. When we envy someone, we wish their downfall although their downfall cannot make things better for us. We unconsciously believe the theory of happiness point.
